The continual movement, dubbed ‘Occupy Wall Street‘ or simply ‘Occupy’, continues to permeate cities, towns and campuses throughout the United States. The initial protests were centered specifically around Wall Street and financial concerns. The movement transformed over the past few months and has branched out to include other issues impacting citizens throughout the United States. The majority of the Occupy protests have remained peaceful demonstrations, though a few pockets of violence and unrest have been experienced.

One of the most recent incidents involved protesters at the campus of the University of California at Berkley. the students of Berkley protested and were documented as being peaceful in their methods. At one point during the protest, campus security used pepper spray at close range and sprayed the protesters as they sat quietly and still. The incident caused a backlash against campus police and have called in to question the decision making process for such police behavior on college students who were, by definition, obeying the law.

The continued upheaval associated with the Occupy movement continues to fracture portions of the country, and the incident at UC Berkley, well documented through film and photographs, further adds another wound to the already bruised financial and social situation in the United States as the country continues to debate the legitimacy of the claims outlined by the Occupy movement.

Once convicted killer Amanda Knox is now enjoying the taste of freedom while another family cries for justice. Amanda Knox is the American student who was convicted of killing her roommate, Meredith Kercher, as the two studied in Italy.

Knox, along with her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and Rudy Guede, were convicted for the rape and stabbing death of Kercher in 2007. Knox and Sollecito were convicted in 2009 and Kercher’s family was having difficulty understanding how one jury could convict the three and another could set them free.

A total of five charges were brought against the former lovers, including murder, theft, possession of a weapon, rape, and interference. They received 25 and 26 year sentences for the crimes. Charges of defamation would later be brought against Knox by Patrick Lumumba. Lumumba had been an initial suspect in the slaying, but charges were later dropped when his alibi collaborated. Knox, also called “Foxy Knoxy” for her striking beauty, was delivered a fine and an additional three year sentence.

The evidence presented at the trial included a bra clasp, reported to have traces of Sollecito’s DNA, as well as a kitchen knife from the man;s home. Although the handle had Knox’s DNA present, forensics revealed the presence of Kercher’s DNA on the blade. The blade did not have blood evidence. The mountain of circumstantial evidence combined with the lack of a witness were enough to convince the new jury that both Knox and Sollecito should be freed. Guede remains imprisoned and has been fingered a the lone culprit by the respective defense teams.

Knox has since left Italy, returning to Seattle, Washington.

When asked about forgiveness, the Kercher family has said that they will be unable to forgive anyone until the truth regarding their daughter’s death is revealed.
